Movie Assessment: The Godfather – The Most Upsetting Hoodlum Picture Of All Time

If you only see on movie in your entire life, many will tell you that you must see “The Godfather.” Based on the best selling novel by Mario Puzo, who also wrote the screenplay, “The Godfather” is an excellent study in how one man’s loyalties slowly shift, and he finds his place of power in the family empire.

The film commences with a huge wedding. This does lots of things. It shows the power and extent of Don Corleone, the patriarch of the family. It shows us all the different characters, most importantly his sons. As we see that the Don is getting on in age, it will become chief to see who succeeds him. We meet his youngest son, Michael, who has just come back from the War in Europe. He is telling his young wife that he has no plans to go into the family partnership.

His wish, is of course valued but the other family members. As the show progresses, we find that there are additional, eminent and authoritative families that are challenging for business. And the business that is mounting rapidly is the drug business. One thing that Don Corleone vows to do is to by no means enter the drug business. It has always been his goal, it seems, to have his son take over a justifiable business, and not a illegal venture. Drug would be in the opposite direction.

But since Don Corleone is very potent, his rejection to enter into the narcotics trade angers his rivals. This sets off a drug war, and there is an effort made on the Don’s life. The family gets together, and decides what to do. They slaughterer must be murdered, and Michael Corleone is just the man to do it. His fidelity has shifted from that of a law abiding citizen, to that of his family, irrespective of their bond to the law.

After ending the killer, Michael has to flee the country. He stays in Italy for a few years, where he falls in love and gets married. The far reach of his father’s enemy find him, and kills his wife with a bomb that was predestined for him. Any hint of loyalty to the law is vanished in young Michael. His devotion now is wholly to his family.

When he returns home, he spends many hours sitting at his fathers side, listening to how to run his business. In yet one more disaster, his older brother, Sonny, is gunned down by opposing gangs. It is becoming more and more clear that not only does he require to throw his loyalties entirely with the Corleone family, but he must turn out to be more heartless than his rivals in order to continue. And ruthless he does become. In one of the most highly commended climactic scenes ever, Michael Corleone exactly becomes the new Godfather, as the scenes of his nephews baptism is expertly juxtaposed with all his enemies being brutally destroyed. “The Godfather” is a movie not to be missed.
